The inescapable spiritual need each of us has is the need to sign the death certificate of our sin nature. I must take my emotional opinions and intellectual beliefs and be willing to turn them into a moral verdict against the nature of sin; that is, against any claim I have to my right to myself. Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ … .” He did not say, “I have made a determination to imitate Jesus Christ,” or, “I will really make an effort to follow Him”-but-”I have been identified with Him in His death.” Once I reach this moral decision and act on it, all that Christ accomplished for me on the Cross is accomplished in me. My unrestrained commitment of myself to God gives the Holy Spirit the opportunity to grant to me the holiness of Jesus Christ.

“… it is no longer I who live … .” My individuality remains, but my primary motivation for living and the nature that rules me are radically changed. I have the same human body, but the old satanic right to myself has been destroyed.

“… and the life which I now live in the flesh,” not the life which I long to live or even pray that I live, but the life I now live in my mortal flesh-the life which others can see, “I live by faith in the Son of God … .” This faith was not Paul’s own faith in Jesus Christ, but the faith the Son God had given to him (see Ephesians 2:8). It is no longer a faith in faith, but a faith that transcends all imaginable limits-a faith that comes only from the Son of God.

Each of us is like a grain of wheat planted by God. Just as a grain of wheat must die so as to produce a harvest, So we must die to self in order to bear the fruits of love. This dying to self is a gradual process & happens in little ways. Every act of humility involves dying to pride. Every act of courage involves dying to cowardice. Every act of kindness involves dying to cruelty. Every act of love involves dying to selfishness. Thus the false self dies & the true self, Made in Gods image, is born & nurtured. It is by giving that we receive; It is by forgiving that we are forgiven; It is by dying that we are born to eternal life.

I dare you to die to your fleshly desires and instead of worrying about how much you love them worry about how you can push them towards Love Himself. Instead of wanting them to be around you pray that they will never be away from Him. Oh, die to your selfishness and honor them ABOVE yourself. That means you don’t love them because they make you feel good; you don’t love them because of what they do to you, or for you, or with you. This, friends, is not even real love. Real love means you’re not even in the picture. Real love doesn’t include yourself in the equation. Real love means you leave them alone if you have to. Real love means instead of talking to them for hours on end you pray for them with a deep desire to see them attain more and more of the Prize of Life. Real love means you don’t lust after them, instead you run after purity with all that you can. Because that’s what they deserve. Real love means you don’t try to fill your desires with that person. Real love means you understand that Christ is the only, the only, only One who will satisfy — yourself and them! Oh, that we would learn to love. Oh, that we would learn to love sincerely. Oh, that we would throw away this world’s definition. Oh, that we would show real, actual, love by laying ourselves down. Greater love has NO MAN than THIS: to lay his (or her) life down for his friends. Stop thinking love is about yourself, because it’s not. Oh, that we would die to this world’s love. Oh, that we would die.
